Mission Statement
Since the 19th century, the sport of Cricket has had a very rich tradition and history worldwide. Cricket has made an increasingly evident impression within the United States in the past couple of decades, the country which hosted the first ever international cricket game against Canada 25-27 September 1844. However, Omaha and its surrounding areas have never had a member owned and operated cricketing organization that was dedicated to promoting and expanding the reach of cricket within the community. As with many of the greatest inventions and organizations of the 20th century, the Cricket Association of Nebraska (CAN) was created to fill this void within the cricketing community in the state of Nebraska. CAN was formed to be a non-profit, democratic organization which is run by its members for the benefit of its members, based on a written constitution.
In the US, cricket has traditionally been marketed to the expatriate population that hails from other cricket-playing nations. While this approach fills the short term needs of a specific demographic, the founders of CAN recognize that the promotion and development of the sport hinges upon the active participation of all sections of the local populace.
Competing with existing popular sports is a tough task for any new sport or organization. Therefore, the founders of CAN have looked at other sports that have gained rapid popularity in the United States and learned from their experience. As a result, the Executive Committee of CAN has recognized that the way to popularize cricket is by offering a variety of opportunities for the youth of the community to participate in the sport. Therefore, CAN is actively promoting cricket to the youth within our community through a series of demonstrations in schools and cricket camps, while also providing a platform for cricketers to participate and enjoy the sport they love in a competitive environment in the Heartland Cricket League.
The Cricket Association of Nebraska is 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of the sport of cricket in Nebraska and beyond.
The specific purposes for which this corporation is organized are:
- To promote, encourage, foster and cultivate interest in the sport of cricket at all levels within the community and within the sport, providing opportunities for recreation and competition;
- To initiate, sponsor, promote and carry out plans, policies and activities that would further the development and advancement of cricket in the city of Omaha, the state of Nebraska, and beyond.
